Anything for Selena

1 04 2012

This weekend marked 17 years since the death of Tejano superstar Selena Quintanilla Perez. Some refer her to as “the Mexican Madonna” while others referred to her as “Queen of Tejano Music.” At the age of 23, she was shot to death by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar.

I still remember hearing about her death when I came home from 2nd grade and at that point, I didn’t realize the importance of who she was and what impact she had on people.  I watched the TV and so many people were on camera crying about the loss of a superstar and how she impacted their lives with her music and her personality. It was until later on that I realized the impact that she had in the Hispanic community and how many held her in high regards.

Watching the biopic, Selena, with my parents is one of the memories I’ll always have because that film just showed how much she accomplished in such a short period of time but it also serves as a reminder that anything is possible if you fight for your dreams.  Besides, this film is a breakthrough role for Jennifer Lopez as we watch her transform herself into the star that so many people loved during and after her death.

Luckily, she still lives on through her music which include the classics such as “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom”, “Amor Prohibido”, and “I Could Fall in Love With You.” What’s your favorite Selena track?

Jennifer Lopez + Pitbull “Dance Again”

1 04 2012

After years of lackluster singles such as “Louboutin”, Jennifer Lopez came back to the scene with the dance heavy “On The Floor” and “Papi” which both proved to be huge hits for the singer.  It seems like Lopez has found her groove with the dance/electropop sound and doesn’t miss a beat with her new pop gem, “Dance Again.”

The airy vocals combined with the simplistic dance beat recreate the magic of “Waiting for Tonight” and “On The Floor” which are attributed as the biggest singles she’s had through her decade-plus singing career.  She sounds comfortable as the dance diva that still can move just as much or even more than her 20-something year old pop star counterparts.

Lopez teams up with her “On The Floor” collaborator, Pitbull, which marks the third time that the pair have worked together. While the track might not be the most original, it does get your stuck in head with its catchy chorus and outrageous rapping of Pitbull which include the lyrical gems, “shimmy shimmy yah…shimmy yam..shimmy yay.”  You can think of this track as a cousin to “On The Floor” but still aims to get people out of the chairs and head to the dancefloor.

Take a note from J.Lo and “dance again” to this new track.

2 out of 4 stars.

The track will be available for purchase at midnight!
